...and this notion rested solely on my suspicion that I would never be fit for real work." - Russell Baker
I have included that quote purely because I want it as a tattoo.
Anyway! Look at that. It's June tomorrow, which means the countdown to the re-release of NIGHT AND CHAOS is on! I feel like I've been horribly unproductive writing-wise this year, and then I remind myself that I've already had three books out, and that I have two more coming up fast. But I think until I finish In Cold Blood, I'm going to keep feeling like I'm lagging, somehow. With tomorrow being the start of a new month, it seems like a good time to crack on. I'm about halfway through, by my estimates, so if I aim for 1k a day, finishing a first draft by the end of the month should be completely achievable. Over-achievable, even.
I'm tidying up some other commitments. Common Brimstone is taking a summer holiday, and I've booked a couple of days off the day job (mostly so I can take Remic back to the vet to have his stitches removed). I'm putting aside the Amber Morgan project I've been dabbling with and I'm resisting the urge to throw myself head-first into a couple of other Shiny Things on my writing to-do list. I desperately want to just focus on In Cold Blood, but I'll admit it's felt like a slog at times. I think part of it is that this is a new story, with new characters, set in an existing world - the Urban Wolf world. I'm working hard to keep the world-building consistent with rules laid out in the series so far, which means a lot of backtracking and fact-checking. I would probably make quicker progress if I just wrote the first draft and then worried about these things, but I can't work like that. Knowing there's a potential error or gap in the story drives me mad. I can't leave it and come back to it later.
Once I've crossed In Cold Blood off the to-do list, I'll probably finish that Amber Morgan project I mentioned, since that's another shorter piece. After that it's a toss-up between three big (verging on epic, in one case) projects - Urban Wolf 6, Blood Canticles 3, or Wild Blood 3. Luckily, that's a decision for Future Nome!

We're on a Late Shift with Alexa Sinclaire
First of all, I need to apologise to all the authors who have sent me guest blogs since April - I am way behind! Blame it on Remic. It's not his fault at all, but he won't know he's being blamed, so it's fine. And second of all, please welcome Alexa Sinclaire to the blog with her latest release, LATE SHIFT!

Title: Late Shift
Author: Alexa Sinclaire
Publisher: Evernight Publishing
Release Date: April 19th, 2016
Genre: M/F Erotic Romance Novella
She knew his name. He was always on the late shift at the construction site she walked past every night on the way home from work. Beyond that, he was a mystery. None of that stopped her from inviting him up to her apartment every night and letting him give her the best orgasms she’d ever had. She couldn’t trust herself to give him anything else. And he never asked for more.
He knew it wasn’t right—night after night he walked her home during his break and she always let him have her, anyway he wanted. She never said no, never turned him away, and she brought him apple pie to top it all off. He knew she deserved more but he wasn’t sure he could give it to her.
When disaster hits, can they confess that they both wanted more?

Excerpt
“So tell me, Tilda, do you often invite men you meet on the street up to your apartment for hot cocoa?” His voice was deep and as he drew out ‘hot cocoa’, she realized how suggestive her invitation must have sounded.
“Oh my God, no, never. Of course not. That’s just stupid. And dangerous. And irresponsible. And stupid. I said that already.” Shit, she was rambling.
Ryan tilted his head to the side, observing her, and she bit her lip to stop herself from spitting out some other moronic reason as to why she shouldn’t invite strangers into her apartment.
“But you invited me up here. And you didn’t even know my name. I could do anything to you. No one even knows I’m here. No one saw us go inside together. You’re a tiny little thing and I could do whatever I wanted.”
He lowered the hot cocoa to the counter behind him and took hers from her hands. Tilda tried not to tremble as his fingers brushed against hers. He was right. Under normal circumstances, she would never bring a strange man up to her apartment, especially in the middle of the night. She wouldn’t have even let him walk her home.
But how she was responding to Ryan was not normal. None of this was normal.
“Don’t you want your hot cocoa?” Her own voice had become husky, and she hated how aroused she sounded.
“I think you know exactly what I want, but first you need to answer me.”
“I didn’t realize you asked me a question.” He smirked and she had to stop herself from reaching out and touching the dimple in his cheek. Shaved head and tattooed paired with a dimple? God, he was lethal combination.
“Why did you invite me up if you know how dangerous it is?”
“Because I know you won’t hurt me.” It sounded so stupid, so ridiculously stupid, but it was the truth. She was drawn to him and she knew by the way he couldn’t stop staring at her that he felt it. “You had plenty of opportunity to drag me into a dark alley on the way here if you wanted to hurt me, and you didn’t.”
He ran his knuckles down her cheek before cupping her face with his large hand. She leaned into it without noticing. He felt so good, so strong, and she would be lying if she said she didn’t crave his touch elsewhere on her body.

#NewRelease #Giveaway Tour: Dark Captive: MF Edition by @EvernightPub #GLBT #Romance
Everyone has a dark side...
Dark Captive is an exclusive collection of dark erotic romance stories featuring alpha men with fierce sexual appetites. They'll stop at nothing to get what they want. And they have their sights on one woman. Possessive and bold, these heroes give their conquests exactly what they crave—to be taken … to be owned. Any resistance offered will be tested, but in the end love rules.
Kidnapping, abduction, and sexual slavery are just a few of the titillating taboo themes in this hand-picked anthology.
Captive Artist by N.J. Young
Carrie Wentworth never expected to be at the center of
a high-stakes art theft. She’s perfectly happy to run her prestigious art
gallery in a small mountain community and ogle the super hot janitor, Ellis
“Jax” Jackson.
But Jax is more than tall, dark, and bulging muscles.
He has an art heist to complete no matter what the cost. When Carrie catches
him in the act, he can’t bring himself to kill the pretty blonde. So instead,
he takes her captive. But he will have to figure out what’s more
important—money or his feelings for Carrie.
Excerpt:
With
a schwing, Jax pulled out a knife. It
wasn’t a huge knife, but it looked very sharp and very pointy.
Carrie
felt that prickle of fear again at the back of her neck. “What are you going to
do with that?”
Jax
rested the point of the knife against the hollow spot at the base of her throat
and bent his head until his face was mere centimeters from her own. Carrie drew
her tongue across her lips, and she could have sworn Jax’s eyes darkened as he
let out a little groan.
He
trailed the point of the knife lightly along the side of her neck and down her
throat, lower between her breasts. She knew she should be afraid, and deep
down, there was a part of her that was, but anxiety seemed to dissipate into an
emanating heat at the center of her very being, as something told her he
wouldn’t hurt her. She didn’t know why, didn’t know what it was, but she knew
he wouldn’t hurt her.
She
focused on his full lips, loving how they parted slightly. The heat from his
body seared her, and he wasn’t even touching her. And his scent … warm, musky,
and deliciously male. Searching his face, she locked eyes with him and held his
gaze for what seemed like an eternity, but was probably only mere seconds.
“Hold
still, love,” he finally said. Trailing the knife down her legs, he kept his
eyes on hers. She shivered at the sensation of the cool metal … or was she
shivering because of his nearness? When he reached her ankles, he sliced
through the tape in one quick jerk of the knife.
He
ripped the remnants of tape off, and Carrie breathed a sigh of relief since she
was able to separate her ankles. With the tape off, she could keep her balance
so much easier. When Jax stood up, she asked, “Aren’t you going to do my
wrists?”
With
a quick headshake, Jax slid the knife back into his ankle holster and stood up.
“Not quite yet. We need to talk first.”
He
looked so somber, but then again, this was a serious situation. Carrie watched
him stalk over to one of the two leather chairs across from the oak desk. Even
though they looked heavy, Jax lifted one as if it were light as a feather and
flipped it around to face her. He sat in it and crossed one ankle over his
knee.
“Okay.”
She took a shaky breath. “Talk. Tell me what’s going on. How did you end up
with a two-hundred-million-dollar painting? What was it doing in my gallery?
Whose house is this? And what … what are you going to do with me? Are you going
to uh…” she gave a tug at the tape on her wrists. “Are you going to kill me?”
