The Witch's Guide to Werewolves is here!
Happy Tuesday! And happy release day to me! My latest paranormal romance is available now! The Witch's Guide to Werewolves is a short and sweet story about an optimistic witch and a maybe-werewolf, and I hope you love it as much as I do!
Callie McIntyre believes in a lot of things. She believes in tarot cards and moon magic, and that's the reason her last girlfriend left her. But she never believed in werewolves until she meets Devon Miller out in the woods one night.
Devon's story is crazy, but who's Callie to argue about it? With a full moon fast approaching, Callie is determined to help Devon tackle her fears. Sure, neither of them know a thing about werewolves, but with another reluctant lyncathrope in tow and all Callie's witchy optimism at work, surely they can get through Devon's first full moon in one piece... Right?

Flashback Friday - Hot urban fantasy at a cool price!
Today's Flashback Friday comes with a bonus! From today until March 19th, you can get October Weeks' THE DAMNED, book one in the Tuck Houston series, for just 99 cents. That's ridiculous! So come and meet Tuck...
Title: The Damned
Series: the Tuck Houston series
Book One
Series website: https://octoberweeks.net/the-damned/
Eight
years ago, slayer Tuck Houston lost two of her closest friends to a
Damned vampire named Josef Dragos—a beast who traded the sun
for darkness and blood. She’s been hunting him since the day she
walked into the carnage he created. But Josef has hidden himself well
in the underground, from both slayers and other vampires.
Then, slayers around the
globe start disappearing in a familiar pattern—Josef’s pattern—she’s
put on the hunt. And despite the painful memories and very real
threat to her future that come with tracking him down, Tuck is
certain of one thing: she is going to make Josef Dragos wish he’d
never been born.

After
making her call, Tuck relaxed back into the seat. “The fight isn’t far
off. Another day or two.” She could feel his eyes on her as she looked
out of her window. She turned her head to look at him, his gaze still
moving from the road to her. “What?”
“You left something out when you were telling us of Bastien’s visit.”
Her back stiffened. “No, I didn’t. I told you everything he told me.”
His
brown eyes glittered for a moment as he held her gaze, just long enough
for her to realize that he wasn’t going to drop the subject.
She’d
known this was coming, that the four of them weren’t going to let the
conversation go. Taking a deep breath, she let it go slowly, then
replied, “You don’t need to know more, Tristan. I’ve told you what you
need to know for this hunt.”
His grip tightened on the wheel, and his jaw tightened as well. “Tristan, please don’t push this.”
His
grip loosened, and his right hand reached out and rested on her cheek.
The warmth she felt through that touch spread over her skin. “Don’t keep
secrets from me, belle chasseuse. I won’t say a word to the others, but don’t keep me in the dark.”
Beautiful hunter… He’d only called her that a handful of times, but the emotion behind that title now was more potent—she could feel the affection behind the words, and that nearly brought tears to her eyes.
She
held those back as she replied, “I knew something was off when I wanted
Sasha to send two vampyrs to watch over the city, though I kept that
from Fiona when I asked her to contact him.” Tristan’s hand left her
cheek, moving it to her knee. “Shortly after she left, after I let
myself process who I’d just killed, tiredness rushed through me.
Tiredness that wasn’t mine. Didn’t take long to figure out a strigoi was
causing it, though not Thorne.” “Bastien?” he asked softly.
“No. Once I was asleep, I opened my eyes in a dream and with me was—” she laid her hand on top of his “—Velnic Nikolai.”
Tristan
stiffened—the hand on her thigh tightened slightly. When she took in
his face, she saw the tension and fight to not only keep calm, but to
focus on the road. The car sped up for a few seconds, getting close to
the one in front of them, then it slowed back down.
“He’s not in the city, but he’s close by.” She told him about the dream and why Velnic was close to the city.
Tristan
rolled his neck after she was done, cracking it. That motion drained
the anger out of him, but the tight grip on her thigh told her the
protective streak in him was alive and well.
“Tristan?”
“He’s here to deal with Thorne?” he asked, tone neutral. “Yes.”
He met her gaze briefly. “Is Thorne more of a threat than you’re letting on?”
Tuck
sighed. “No, I didn’t hold back on that. I’m concerned of what his plan
is after Josef and his son are dead, almost as concerned as I am with
Penelope’s plan, but there’s nothing I can do about it—as of right now,
he hasn’t betrayed me, nor has he even thought about betraying me.”
“They don’t know of his plan?”
“No, and I believe Bastien. They don’t call in Velnic without good reason—Thorne has definitely done something.”
His
jaw tightened again, and his forehead creased, which told her he was
fighting his anger again. She hated that she couldn’t assure him that
she’d be okay, that Thorne wouldn’t harm her, but she couldn’t.
“You
can’t help me with him, Tristan,” she said softly, moving in her seat
so her body was more turned to him. “You can’t fight him, and you can’t
keep his betrayal from harming me.”
“I
know,” he said through clenched teeth. After a moment, he loosened his
jaw and relaxed into the seat again. “I’ll do what I can on this hunt,
what you ask of me, even if it kills me.”
Sadness
swept through her at those words. Tristan would live through the fight,
of that she had no doubt, but the aftermath is what he was talking
about.
Her death would take a part of him.
“That
would kill me, too,” she replied as she leaned back into her seat.
“Whatever happens, get Ciprian out of the tunnels and someplace safe.”
“I can promise you that.”
“Tristan?”
He squeezed her hand. “What?”
“I
have no intention on dying, but if something happens to me, I want you
to promise you’ll take care of Penelope.” Anger coiled within her at the
request, though she didn’t show it when she met his gaze briefly.
“She’ll be near impossible to track, but she can’t be left to her own
devices once Josef is dead. He’s her only leash.”
“We’ll see to her death—I swear it.”
As
they neared the drop-off point, Tuck got her mind back on what needed
to be done. This hunt wasn’t done—she had work to do—but her anger at
the situation was hard to swallow. “I am going to rip that bastard
apart,” she said, the slayer in her rising. “He’s going to wish he’d
never crawled out his dead mother’s womb.” And his son wasn’t going to
fair much better.
She could taste their deaths already.

Five Facts About In Cold Blood
Well, lots of people seemed to enjoy my Five Things I Hate About Cube post, so why not make it a thing?
Yes! IN COLD BLOOD is finally unleashed and you can grab your copy from Evernight directly, or from Amazon US, Amazon UK, and probably wherever else good ebooks are sold. And you can read an excerpt here to get you in the mood! And, just for something a little bit fun and different, here are five things you probably don't know about IN COLD BLOOD.
1. Phoebe suffers from Siodmak's Syndrome, which means she can't shapeshift. I first mentioned Siodmak's way back in SILVER KISS as a bit of a throwaway thing, so you may know the term if you've followed the Urban Wolf series. What you probably don't know is that I named it after Robert Siodmak, director of such glorious films as Cobra Woman.
2. I started writing IN COLD BLOOD a few years back, then abandoned it, then picked it up again last year. Phoebe didn't exist in the original version, but Aisling did...and she's existed with me for nearly a decade. Long before I even dreamed up the very first Urban Wolf story, I wanted to write a story about a werewolf who chooses to live mostly as a wolf, and I wanted to call her Aisling. My original idea for her involved a post-apocalyptic world where nuclear winter ruled and werewolves had been hunted nearly to extinction. I still think it's a good idea...but I prefer Aisling where she is now. She's a perfect foil for Phoebe!
3. Phoebe suffers from anxiety. I do too, although not as badly as I did when I was younger. Writing a character with anxiety challenged me and pushed me, and nearly made me give up on the book. Turns out writing about anxiety makes me anxious, and I was terrified everyone would hate Phoebe and the book and me and ugh. I'm glad I'm pushed through, and whilst it's never been my intention to write "an issues" story, I'm glad I stuck with Phoebe the way she is. I love that she works to manage her anxiety, and it reminded me that it can be done. A good lesson to re-learn every now and then.
4. My goal with every entry in the Urban Wolf series, whatever the length, is to open the world up a little bit more. SILVER KISS gives us a good, solid starting point with werewolves. BLOOD HUNT introduces vampires. PHANTOM FEARS teases the idea of ghosts, and COLD NIGHT MOON gives us fae creatures (or one, at any rate). With IN COLD BLOOD, my idea was that, well, someone had to be noticing all these weird and wonderful creepy beasties. And someone would be keeping notes...This will tie directly into the plot of the next Urban Wolf book, which will take us back to Ayla and Shannon. The circle of life, etc.
5. And finally (just to get us up to five), IN COLD BLOOD is the first of a planned trilogy about Phoebe, Aisling, and the Luporum. I already have book 2 mostly planned out (in my head, anyway), but my aim is write that Ayla and Shannon book first. So if you enjoy IN COLD BLOOD, rest assured that there'll be more from my socially awkward werewolves in love - and the Urban Wolf series in general! - in the future :) Happy reading!

IN COLD BLOOD - cover reveal!
Okay, I did share the cover on Facebook and Twitter last night, but you've got to have an ~official~ cover reveal, right?
How beautiful is this? I feel like every new cover is my favourite cover, but this is definitely my favourite cover. I love the colours and the wolf, and the blood spatter on the title. Perfection!
IN COLD BLOOD is out on Thursday 2nd February, and is the first in my Luporum mini-series. This is a spin-off from the Urban Wolf series, but you can read IN COLD BLOOD without having read any of those books. Here's the blurb to whet your appetite!
Phoebe Fairley wanted to be a librarian. Somehow, she’s become a vampire hunter. Women are dying across the country and the police are baffled. Phoebe’s just supposed to be gathering information on the deaths, but as the body count mounts, she can’t help but break the rules and get involved. She knows what the killer is – and catching and containing it is vital. If she can persuade the police to believe her, and keep her secretive bosses happy, she stands a chance of capturing a very real, very deadly vampire. Not bad for a werewolf who can’t shapeshift.

Aisling is happy living as a feral wolf. She’s got no time for human affairs, until a mysterious creature attacks her and leaves her in human hands. Now, if she wants her life back, she’ll have to join Phoebe’s hunt. There are just a couple of snags. One, she hates humans. And two, she’s falling hard for Phoebe. With a monster to catch and her own past to protect, will Aisling trust her head or her heart?

Wednesday Snippet - THROWN TO THE WOLVES
Paige went to Romania looking for inspiration for a book. She found herself caught in a horror story. Attacked and left for dead by a vampire, Paige finds herself at the mercy of Kata, a beautiful, enigmatic werewolf. Their attraction is instant, but Paige's fate hangs in the balance. She may yet be turned into a vampire herself. Soon it's clear to Paige that the only way to save herself may be to return to the woman who attacked her...even if it means placing both herself and Kata in the greatest danger.

Wednesday Snippet - Through Fire
It begins! Oh God. Okay. I have to admit, I've had the first line of this book in my head for months, but I didn't really expect it to lead here...Poor Tris...
Tuesday, 4 October 2016
“The beginning is the most important part of the work.”
- Plato, The Republic
So, later than expected (because that seems to be my theme this year), Thrown to the Wolves is finished, polished, and submitted. I like this little werewolfy romance a lot, and I hope to have good news about it soon.
That brings us into October, and Blood Canticles 3. It was always my plan to start on this in the autumn, so even though I'd hoped to get going in September, I'm okay with being a bit behind schedule. This book will easily take the rest of the year to write, unless I get lucky, and myperhaps foolish aim is to write a companion novella alongside it.
See, Blood Canticles 3, tentatively titled Through Fire, will take Lola and Tristesse away from their ragtag group for the bulk of the book, but events in Fort Rosser will continue apace, because that's how the world works. The nasty stuff that happened in DARK DAYS will have knock-on effects for Dawn, Imani, and Rowan that need to be addressed while Lola and Tris are...away. At first I thought about writing Through Fire with alternating viewpoints, with Lola, Tris, and Dawn all being focal characters.
Then I realised I'd probably end up with either a hot mess or a 100k epic working that way, and decided it might be easier to write one novel and one novella. I could be wrong about this route, but it feels like the right path, so we'll see. In any case, my schedule for the rest of the year is now as follows:
Write Through Fire
Write companion novella (Pale Queen)
Try not to make a mess
I am very excited about both these stories. If everything goes to plan, Lola's world is going to explode (metaphorically) and I can show you all kinds of new, horrible, amazing things. I've spent a lot of this year doing research and reading heavily to inform the world of Through Fire, and Pale Queen will hopefully do its own job in building on the magic and lore of BLOOD WITCH and DARK DAYS. I'll try to share snippets if they're not too spoilery. If you want a glimpse at the Blood Canticles world in the meantime, there's my Pinterest board here, and an ever-growing Spotify playlist at the bottom of this page. Enjoy!

DEMONIZED - The Shiny New Cover
First, the obvious thing. I found this cover before I saw the redesign for UNDERTOW, so I know there's no...cohesion between this, UNDERTOW, and the Ethan Banning shorts, but hopefully I'll be able to update the shorts in the future to match one or the other. And this cover is, I do believe, stunning, so I'm trying not to get hung up on aesthetics too much. And, you know, never judge a book, etc.
But if you do want to judge a book by it's cover, you could do worse than judge DEMONIZED by this one.
Ta-da! Once again, this is by the amazing Erica Petite, and I love it. I've got Strong Feelings about how Ethan should look, and I know that the Ethan in my head will never be the same as the Ethan in your head, or anyone else's, so when I went looking for new cover art, I resolved to focus on mood and how evocative the art was, rather than try to find the perfect cover model. This cover has the mood I want, 100%. I snapped it up without thinking twice.
As with AFTERLIFE, I don't have a release date set yet for DEMONIZED, but hopefully it'll be before the end of the year. AFTERLIFE will be the priority, because it's much longer and, well, it's really where Ethan's story starts, so that makes sense. News will come as I have it to share, I promise. In the meantime, enjoy the new covers! And if you can think of anything cool you'd like to see added to the updated books, let me know. I want to offer something extra for people who may already have read both books, if I can come up with something. Money is precious and I like to think if you part with yours for one of my books, I make it worthwhile.
So...missing scenes? Flash fiction or short stories? Q&As? Facts about Yasmin and Ethan's world? I'm open to all ideas!

AFTERLIFE - The Shiny New Cover!
Drum roll please...
Ta-da!
I cannot tell you how excited I was when I saw this cover originally, because this is just is Yasmin, and the colours and background are so perfect for Shoregrave and this particular tale. The stars were definitely right on this occasion. Many thanks to the amazingly talented and gracious Erica Petite for providing the perfect cover for AFTERLIFE's return.
And here's the blurb - reworded from the original and possibly still to be finalised:
Yasmin Stoker lives a double life. By day she's a ghost tour guide for Shoregrave's tourists. By night she's beholden to the undead king of the city, Nicomedes. Her duty is simple: keep the supernatural predators in check by feeding on their souls. It's an easy job until she witnesses a ghostly girl killing a teenage boy.
When Nicomedes orders her to keep a mortal private eye off the trail, she has no choice but to obey - even though her insticts tell her not to, and soon she finds herself trapped in a deadly web of deceit. With her undead and human allies to help her, Yasmin must deal with rogue zombies, crazed ghosts, and a charming history teacher in her quest to solve the mystery. And along the way, she uncovers some heartbreaking truths about her own existence...
I don't have a release date in mind yet as there's a fair bit of work to be done on both AFTERLIFE and DEMONIZED, but I'm aiming to have them both available by the end of the year. Stay tuned for DEMONIZED's new cover later this week!

Happy Release Day To Me!
Would it be in awful taste to say THE NECROMANCER'S APPRENTICE lives again? Probably.
Anyway! You can get it for free at Evernight, Smashwords (thanks for letting me know about that, Tez Miller!), and All Romance Ebooks.
And to whet your appetite, here's a peek at the first chapter. Enjoy!
Read on for an excerpt...

"A piece of art is never a finished work...
...It answers a question which has been asked, and asks a new question.” - Robert Engman
This morning I finished the final edits on THE NECROMANCER'S APPRENTICE, which, you may remember, is coming to Evernight soon as a free read! Huzzahs! Re-reading the story for the third or fourth time this year, I realised there's a lot of scope for a sequel. Whilst this is definitely a story that stands on its own, there are still questions woven in that spark my writerly interest and make me wonder what happens next in this world...
...And this is bad, because I really don't need to be adding more series to my pile. I'm still working on In Cold Blood (which is clearly not going to be a nice little 30k novella anymore), and then I'm going to move onto Blood Canticles 3 because I am dying to get back to Lola and Tristesse. I want to at least have made a solid start on the next Urban Wolf novel before the end of the year, and I also have an ongoing Amber Morgan series that I'm crazy about. Plus the last two books in the Deva Chronicles trilogy. That's before we even get to Crow Called and Mercy's Gate, which you'll see on the left under the Work in Progress header. I want to finish them too, eventually...
I also want to write some short stories about LESBIAN WEREBEARS because I cannot get that idea out of my head right now. So a sequel to a free urban fantasy short story that's actually already been published once is waaaaaaaaaay down the to-do list. But there are questions left for me with Evanthe and Morrow's story. At one point I did plan a whole series of shorts set in their world, but focusing on different couples. I even had about half of one written, but that story vanished when my first laptop finally gave up on life. I guess the first question that needs to be answered though is, does anyone else want more in this world? I won't know that for a while...So I think any potential sequels can stay on the back burner for a few months yet.
But! The fact remains that THE NECROMANCER'S APPRENTICE is edited, the dedication and excerpt have been sent to my publisher, and I'm eagerly awaiting the spanky new cover and release date. Can't wait to share those with you, and I can't wait to see Evanthe's story back in the world. Fingers crossed it won't be too long now!

THE NECROMANCER'S APPRENTICE rises again!
NEWS! I'm delighted to announce I've just signed the contract for THE NECROMANCER'S APPRENTICE. This baby will be coming to Evernight in August, and it's going to be free!
I love being able to offer free stories (WOLF STRAP, PHANTOM FEARS, and BOUND BY NIGHT all are, in case you wondered), as it's a chance to say thank you to everyone who buys my books, leaves reviews, tweets, messages, and generally gives me the encouragement to keep going. And I'm thrilled to add Evanthe's tale to my free reads library. If you're down for urban fantasy, zombies, romance, and eating pizza at midnight whilst having an existential crisis, I think you'll like this one. Here's the blurb!
Zombies. Black magic. Romance. Nobody said necromancy was easy.
All Evanthe wants is to hone her necromancy skills and gain the affections of her reclusive mentor, Morrow. Just when she thinks he might reciprocate her feelings, a face from his past threatens the life Evanthe is working so hard for. Now she's up against rogue necromancers, smarmy demonologists, and blood-thirsty zombies as she and Morrow fight to protect a secret that could kill them both. Evanthe's a talented necromancer, but that might not be enough to guarantee her a happy ending.

NIGHT AND CHAOS - back from limbo!
It really does feel like this book has been in limbo for the past four years. I'm so excited to see it back and be able to talk about it in a positive context! So here we go - the blurb and a round-up of buy links. Hope you're going to love it!
Ryan's past isn't just haunting her. It's trying to kill her.
Ryan McCarthy fled Kimberlyn Island, her father, and her lover six years ago, desperate to build a life away from the weird science and supernatural experiments of her childhood. But everything she hoped to escape comes back with a vengeance when she's kidnapped and tortured by a possessed madman out for revenge on the man responsible for his possession: Ryan's father.
Now, reunited with the lover she abandoned, Ryan is forced back into a world of danger and darkness she no longer understands, pursued by enemies with powers she can't fathom. But Ryan's not entirely powerless herself. She'll have to use every trick she knows—as well as the mystic gift she hates—to stay ahead of those enemies. And that will be easier said than done.
Available now from Evernight, ARe, Amazon US, Amazon UK

"Time cools, time clarifies"
Mark Twain
Almost exactly four years ago, NIGHT AND CHAOS was released for the first time. June 1st, 2012, to be precise. Shortly after that, I realised how bad a decision I'd made with my choice of publisher, and it tainted my view of the book, so that for a long time I remembered it as being...well, not great. I've talked about that here.
Earlier this year, through a series of events that still rather baffle me, that publisher agreed to release NIGHT AND CHAOS to me a year ahead of schedule, and now I'm thrilled to say that tomorrow it will be re-released, this time with a publisher I trust.
Regular readers will know I'm not the greatest at sticking to schedules, but my hope is to have the rest of the trilogy written by the end of 2017, so that Ryan's story can finally be finished. I know now, having spent a lot of hours re-reading, polishing and generally improving NIGHT AND CHAOS for its re-release, that it's not a bad story. In fact, I think it may even be pretty awesome, and I'm looking forward to seeing it back out in the world. More than that, I'm excited about writing parts two and three.
I've got my fingers crossed that you'll join me and Ryan on her globe-trotting adventures! If you want a sneak preview of NIGHT AND CHAOS, there's a teaser up at the ARe Cafe right now. It's a steamy one...but this is me, so there's also a man with a cyborg hand. Enjoy!

Guest Blog - Yuki and Olivia R Burton take over!
Since on Friday I got distracted by NXT Takeover (OMG I love American Alpha so hard. SO HARD), I didn't get to post this. And yesterday I went to finalise my holiday to Iceland with Mum, so I didn't post it then either. But today I have neither American Alpha or Iceland to distract me, so here we go!
Since Yuki is always keen to help around the house, I asked her to sit down with my friend and fellow cat-lover, Olivia R Burton, and ask her some questions about the re-release of her funny, smart, sugar-rich urban fantasy, MIXED FEELINGS. Yuki did her best to stay on topic and I think she did very well for a first attempt. So, without further ado, let's see what they had to talk about!
Y: Thank you, Miss Olivia, for sharing all your book and cat and cake news with us! Now I am off to steal socks from the neighbours, because I worry that my people maybe don't have enough. Good day!

Yuki did her best to stay on topic and I think she did very well for a first attempt. So, without further ado, let's see what they had to talk about!
Y: Hello, Miss
Olivia! I am Miss Yuki, and I am a Beautiful Girl and also a cheeky
missus sometimes. Like me, your book cover is very beautiful. Would
you tell me a bit about the inside and is it also a cheeky missus?
ORB: I'd say
Gwen can be pretty cheeky, even though she's usually too busy being
cowardly and hungry to be cheeky. She does have some fun adventures,
which I hear you have your share of as well. I'll bet if Gwen got
stuck on the roof of the shed, she'd cry more than you do, though.
Y: It is true that I do cry a lot when I get stuck on the shed roof and up trees and on the roof of the house, but it's not because I'm upset. I just want everyone to know where I am at all times in case they want to bring me something.
ORB: In Mixed
Feelings, Gwen's first book, she doesn't get stuck on the shed,
but she does have to help some fairy monsters find some missing kids,
which she needs help with just like you sometimes need help coming
down off the roof! Luckily, like you have your people, she has her
best friend Chloe there to hold her hand and make sure she gets
through the ordeal safely.
Y: Yes, it is good to have helpful people. My people are very patient with me when I forget how to get off the shed. I understand
that there is a werewolf in your book, which is like a big dog. I
myself do not like dogs, so can you explain why you put one in there?
ORB: I bet you
wouldn't mind this werewolf. Mel doesn't turn into a wolf too often,
and spends most of his time just trying to get his hands on kitties.
Generally they're a different type of kitty than you are, but I'm
sure he'd be more than happy to scratch behind your ears if you
asked. He's always happy to please a lady.
Y: And I am always happy to be pleased! You have a
lot of cats. Which one is in charge?
ORB: It used to
be Snapshot in charge, but that's been a source of contention in the
house since my roommate moved in. He has a lady cat named Lucca who
likes to think of herself as being the boss, as well. They steer
clear of each other, both pretending they are the boss, and have
decided it's not worth having words over anymore.
Y: As an only cat, I am in charge by default but I would be in charge anyway because I am the most precious and beautiful cat ever, the man says. The lady in
your book, Gwen, can tell people's feelings with her mind, which I
think would be good for cats, because sometimes I have to meow twice
to make people do things for me, and if they just knew what I wanted
with magic, that would save time. Do you think Gwen's magic would be
good in real life?
ORB: Hmmm.
That's a good question, Yuki. I'd say that, if all people could
actually feel the emotions of people and animals around, the world
would have to be a much different place. It could make us all more
compassionate, helping us to see that people we say mean things to
have feelings too, and aren't just standing in front of us willing to
take verbal abuse. On the other hand, it could also have become such
a common occurrence throughout history that people would go the
opposite way and be jaded about feeling the sadness of those around
them. Maybe we would be so used to feeling those around us being sad
or angry or happy that we wouldn't really notice anymore.
Y: My people
moved the snake tanks so I can't sit and watch them and tap on the
glass any more and that made me sad, but nobody is helping me.
ORB: I bet the
snakes miss seeing your cute little face!
Naomi's note: She's not sad at all, don't worry. |
Y: You have
another book about Gwen and cake out, too. What else happens in that
besides cake, and are there going to be more after that one?
ORB: If it were
up to Gwen, nothing would happen other than cake. A glutton sitting
around eating cupcakes and candy wouldn't make for good reading,
though, so Gwen's going to have many more interesting adventures. In
Business With
Pleasure, Gwen's second book, she's got to help find a murderer,
help stop a stalker, and make nice with her ex-husband. She does get
to eat ice cream toward the end, though! In the next book there will
be more cupcakes, more werewolves (sorry, Yuki!), and a proposal.
Y: Gwen is very adventurous! Where can
people keep track of your cake books?
ORB: They can go
to my website, OliviaRBurton.com,
or they can follow me on Twitter.
I also have a page on Facebook
that can easily be liked, and an Instagram
where I often post pictures of all my cats.
Y: Thank you, Miss Olivia, for sharing all your book and cat and cake news with us! Now I am off to steal socks from the neighbours, because I worry that my people maybe don't have enough. Good day!

Naomi's note: I don't know if she did steal these socks or not, but they definitely aren't ours and she does look really pleased with herself so... |

Wednesday Snippets Are Still Not Dead
Yes, it's getting harder to think of titles. Ssshh. The important thing is, writing is happening! Here's the incontrovertible evidence:

Wednesday Snippets Will Not Die
I'll admit that work on In Cold Blood isn't going as fast as I'd like. Real life has been busy and a tiny bit stressful, insofar as Remic's Grotesque Bulge and Kyle's on-again-off-again back surgery goes. This past weekend I was working on edits for NIGHT AND CHAOS, and I think generally speaking I'm just a bit burned out. Balancing my writing goals with my day job and Common Brimstone can be tricky to say the least, and I think I'm approaching the point where I need a holiday from one thing or the other.
Last June I shut Common Brimstone for a couple of weeks, and I'm probably going to do the same this June, too, especially since I potentially have two books coming out that month. Hopefully the timings will work out so that I can finish In Cold Blood in June, if I haven't already.
Anyway! I am still beavering away on it, and I offer you proof. Enjoy!

Wednesday Snippet!
Confession: I'm slacking on In Cold Blood at the moment, because a rabid plot bunny sank its nasty big pointy teeth into me last week and I've been working away on an Amber Morgan story since. I know! But it is what it is. It's just, you know, the heart wants what it wants.
That said, I am still working on In Cold Blood and I have no intentions of getting too distracted by my alter ego. I may have christened 2016 the Year of the Phoenix, but writing wise it's the Year of the Werewolf.
So it's time for a snippet! Enjoy.

“Those are the voices of my brothers, darling; I love the company of wolves.”
Angela Carter
So I've been saying for a while now I want to write the next Urban Wolf novel this year, Black Dog. And if you check the nifty word count metre in the sidebar, you'll see I have indeed started. Admittedly, I started a couple of years ago and subsequently stopped, but that's beside the point. The novel has a beginning.
And there's also an Urban Wolf spin-off with a beginning. Again, started a couple of years ago and then stopped. That was a thing I did for a while. I think I've mentioned the spin-off previously too (In Cold Blood). Well, now I've finished and submitted my latest Amber Morgan project, I'm ready to dig back into my werewolf girls' world. My only problem is, I don't know which one to work on first.
I don't think it especially matters which one I go with, in terms of the timeline of the Urban Wolf world (ie, you'd be able to read either first without getting spoiled for the other - different characters, different part of the world). But there are developments for Ayla in Black Dog that are explained by the main plot of In Cold Blood, and it's a question of "do I want the readers to encounter This Thing first in the spin-off or Black Dog? Do I want readers to discover This Thing right alongside Ayla, or do I want them to be ahead of her?
I'm leaning towards working on In Cold Blood first, because I think it will be a novella rather than a novel, and it kind of follows on neatly from BLOOD HUNT in a way. I need to re-read both WIPs before making a firm decision, but either way, I'm back in the Urban Wolf world right now. And that's one of my favourite places to be.

Sound the Trumpets!
So I said recently that I thought NIGHT AND CHAOS would be the easiest of my former-Damnation Books titles to re-home. Turns out I was right! I'm delighted to announce that I've signed a contract with Evernight Publishing for the first of The Deva Chronicles. Huzzahs! The projected release date is July, but that's always subject to change. I'm so, so happy to be able to give Ryan's story a second chance, and I feel like now I can plan the rest of the trilogy with confidence. Here's to the future!
And here's a look at the (unofficial) blurb:
Ryan's past isn't just haunting her.
It's trying to kill her.
Ryan McCarthy fled Kimberlyn Island,
her father, and her lover six years ago, desperate to build life away
from the weird science and supernatural experiments of her childhood.

every trick she knows – as well as the mystic gift she hates – to
stay ahead of those enemies. And that will be easier said than done.
